• No charges for students who beat Nex Benedict the day before he died

On Thursday, the Tulsa County district attorney said that prosecutors would not bring charges related to the death of Nex Benedict.

• Teen beaten to death in a school bathroom bullying attack. The school didn’t call an ambulance.

Nex Benedict — a nonbinary, Native American, 16-year-old sophomore — was reportedly beaten to death on February 7 by three older female students in the bathroom of Owasso High School in Oklahoma. The school refused to call an ambulance for the injured teen and didn’t inform police of the attack until Benedict was later admitted into the hospital — they died from their injuries the next day.

• Queer teen dies by suicide after intense Instagram bullying

Pranshu, a 16 year old Queer Artist and a 10th class student from Ujjain, MP, lost their life to suicide on November 21st,” Yes, We Exist posted on the platform. “Prior to their death, they faced mass bullying on Instagram, for over a week, after their Diwali Reel where they wore a saree went viral. The reel earned over 4000 comments, many of which were homophobic.

• Salvador Rios dies as the result of cyberbullying, family claims, as bullies targeted him for being gay

Salvador Rios, 14, took his own life on August 15 after a social media post allegedly launched a homophobic attack and shared private information about him.

• Mississippi’s new book-banning law denies minors access to e-books & audiobooks

The law forbids anyone under 18 from reading a book that mentions pooping, nudity, or LGBTQ+ issues.

• School bans “safe space” signs after parents complained about favoritism for LGBTQ+kids

The LGBTQ+-affirming signage at Long Valley Middle School, in place since 2019, was the result of a student-led effort at inclusiveness. Recent complaints by parents led Turnamian, superintendent for the Washington Township School District, to consult with district lawyers.

• 13-year-old boy died by suicide after homophobic bullying at school

A 13-year-old boy in France named Lucas died by suicide last Saturday, January 7 after facing anti-LGBTQ+ bullying at school. People close to his family say that the school did little to stop the bullying.

• Bullying of LGBTQ students on the rise this year according to high school principals

Nearly half of the public high school principals who participated in a new nationally representative survey say they faced efforts from parents or the broader community to “challenge or limit LGBTQ+ students’ rights” during the 2021–2022 school year. The new study’s results suggest that adult efforts to limit LGBTQ+ students’ rights has led to increased bullying of LGBTQ+ students in schools.
