In the face of stringent opposition, these Uranians and their literary and aesthetic works established an eccentric positionality worthy of consideration — to further our understanding of Victorian sexuality and culture. Chapter one considers recent engagements of Gerard Manley Hopkins’s eroticism; chapter two considers Hopkins’s unique problematics; chapter three is a close reading of Hopkins’s ‘Epithalamion’; chapter four considers the paederastic pedagogy advocated by Walter Pater in Marius the Epicurean; chapter five considers the breach between Pater and Oscar Wilde facilitated by Pater’s review of The Picture of Dorian Gray.
